This is the question we get asked more than any other. Do I need video? The short answer: not technically. The longer answer: if you want to grow, yes.
The podcasting landscape has shifted. YouTube is now the number one platform for podcast discovery. Social media algorithms prioritise video. Listeners increasingly expect to see, not just hear, the conversations they're subscribing to. Audio-only podcasts still work, but they're playing with one hand tied behind their back.
The Numbers
YouTube's own data shows that podcast content on the platform has grown significantly year on year. Spotify has invested heavily in video podcasting, with video episodes consistently outperforming audio-only equivalents in engagement metrics. On social media, video clips generate dramatically more impressions and shares than audiograms or static quote cards.
These aren't fringe trends. They're structural shifts in how people discover and consume podcast content. Ignoring them doesn't make them go away.
YouTube as a Podcast Platform
For years, YouTube was treated as an afterthought by podcasters. Upload the audio with a static image and move on. That approach no longer works, and arguably never did.
YouTube is a search engine. People search for topics, and YouTube serves them the most relevant, most engaging content. If your podcast is video-enabled with proper titles, thumbnails, and chapters, it appears in those results. If it's an audio file with a stock image, it gets buried.
The discovery potential is enormous. Many of the fastest-growing podcasts in the last two years have YouTube as their primary growth channel, not Apple or Spotify.
What Actually Works
The podcasts that grow fastest on video use multi-camera setups. A wide shot of the conversation, close-ups of each speaker, and occasional cutaways. This allows the editor to create visual variety, which keeps viewers watching longer.
Lighting should be professional but natural-looking. Harsh overhead lights and dark shadows are distracting. Warm, even, flattering light is the goal.
The background should be intentional. A well-designed studio set, a branded backdrop, or a genuine office that looks good on camera. Avoid the "sitting in a spare bedroom" look that screams amateur.
Short-Form Clips: The Growth Engine
The real power of video podcasting isn't the full-length episode. It's the clips. A sixty-second highlight from your conversation, cut for vertical format, subtitled, and posted on Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and YouTube Shorts. These clips are how new audiences find your show.
One episode can generate five to ten clips. Each clip is a trailer for your podcast. Each one is optimised for a different platform. Each one has the potential to reach people who have never heard of you.
This only works with video. An audiogram with a waveform animation is functional, but it can't compete with a well-cut video clip for attention and engagement.
How We Do It
Our studio is built for video podcasting. Multi-camera 4K setup with Sony cinema cameras, professional lighting, and a set designed to look good on screen. An engineer handles the technical side so you can focus on the conversation. The footage is edited into the full episode and a set of platform-optimised clips.
Video isn't optional anymore. But it doesn't have to be a burden. With the right setup and the right team, it's seamless.
